Favorite Class: ART 201 - History of Art 2
My favorite class at AIU was History of Art 2 taught by Kathy Tidman. She was originally from New York, came to London to get her masters, and ended up finding her husband here in London and staying there. Therefore, it was great getting to talk to her about both sides, living in the United States and her transition to moving to London.
I had this class two times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11-1:15. I never missed a class and I loved coming and listening to Professor Tidman because she knew so much about Art History. There was only one other student in my class, James that was from the U.S. the other five students were studying abroad from Paris. So it was great to hear their point of view on the art that we were studying and to meet other students my age from another part of the world. During class, we studied slides by describing them and learning what to look for in a painting and how to describe it in the proper way. We also went on field trip to the Tate Britain and to the Walis Collection. She also had us do two projects throughout the year where we would have to go to a certain museum and find something that we were talking about in class and write a paper on it and draw a picture of that particular piece of art. Everyday she usually brought in an article about art or a new museum opening or a house that we could go and visit to keep us up to date on current events.
Her exams consisted of slide identification and being able to write a paragraph about the slide, then we would also have to write a time line of works of art that we had studied, definitions, and finally two essays. They were very time consuming but they really tested your knowledge of the subject and afterwards I went away feeling that I had learned so much. I put much more work into this class than many of the others that I took while I was in London.
Tidman was a great teacher and I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to have her and participate in her class.
