Favorite Class: ART 312 - History of London Theatre
The classes I attended as a student at AIU were very educational and even more of an exciting part of my day. My favorite was a theatre class called "History of London Theatre." The class involved attending different West End plays every Wednesday evening, and then writing reviews on each play and discussing them in a diverse classroom setting with many different views and opinions from other students.
Throughout the term we viewed many different types of plays; from comedy, to musicals, to ballet and even smaller productions just coming out in the theatre world. Some of my favorites I was able to see through this theatre class were Les Miserables, The Buddy Holly Story, Rent, Cinderella Ballet, and The Graduate.
The students received tickets to our plays every Wednesday in class. We always seemed to have such amazing seats- somewhere in the first ten rows of the theatre! Students had the option of meeting at a designated place around school and then going down to the theatre with the class, or going independently if they had other plans. I had a great tradition with a few students I met in the class. Together we would pick a different place in the West End to have dessert together before each show. It was such a great way to make friends and become more familiar with feeling like a true London citizen! With seeing so many different plays, we also were able to be in so many of the historic theatre buildings in the West End. Some have held very prestigious events and it was amazing to see how enormous and beautiful they were.
My professor was a very interesting man who had a large history of being involved in theatre himself, including writing and acting. Through the different discussions in the classroom, I understood so much more about each play and the different meanings each had to be uncovered. Through him, I learned to look for different meanings and life lessons each play can teach. Writing my reviews helped to pull everything together and is a great reminder for me today of my experiences at AIU. I would recommend this class to any student who is studying abroad and would like to gain a greater knowledge for the theatre amazing London has to offer!
